The idea of City
Social Marketing has it's basis in a set of quasi-humble roots. It originally
started out because I became infuriated with the ways that sites like Classmates or ReUnion
seemed to offer a free way for people to connect, but at the root they wanted to charge an
arm and a leg for it's members to truly make the connections. Don't get me wrong, you can
connect on these other sites for free, but it is somewhat limited and in order to find out
who has visited your page... it cost money. I wanted something better and even though I did
not have the means to build a site even close to Classmates or ReUnion... I felt there was a way
around merely mimicking their sites.
I toyed around with the idea for over a year, during this period I found certain things which
I could do which wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. To this day I haven't figured out other parts,
but I am still searching. It is very possible that I'll never accomplish exactly what was envisioned,
but I might still create a suitable substitute.
Around late March or early April I found that I liked Search Engine Tactics, Social Marketing and
Social Media Marketing. Chris Lang and I talked about this and he came up with the name City Social
Marketing. I snared the term because it said so much about what I intended to do and what I learned
that I liked. The term provided me with so much room to grow... and the best part is that it was not
taken. No one used the term, at the time, so I broke down and bought the domain. Hopefully the term
will be defined properly and become an accepted sub-catagory of Social Marketing and Social Media
Marketing.
